Class Schedule and Descriptions

Tuesday, March 12 | 9 am – 12 pm: Structural Loads and Load Path-IBC2021

Presented by AlaaEldin Abouelleil, PhD, PE, International Code Council (ICC)

Residential and commercial inspectors and plan examiners in particular will find this seminar particularly useful, as well as architects and engineers looking for a review of structural loads and their load paths. With a focus on connections, the course considers moment frame, braced frame and shear wall load paths in selecting a particular structural frame for a single story, low-rise or mid-rise building.

Learning Objectives: Identify general load path through a building built of light-frame construction, concrete shear walls or steel frames; determine applicable loads to be used in design of a building given its location and climate; and describe how to select controlling or critical load combinations.

Who should take this course: Plan Reviewers, Inspectors, Building and Fire Officials, Designers, and Engineers (OBOA members and non-members welcome)

Level of Expertise: Intermediate and Advanced

Class Materials: International Building Code (IBC) 2021 and ASCE7-16

About our PresenterAbouelleil received a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in structural engineering from Kansas State University, as well as a certificate of applied mathematics. Abouelleil is a structural consultant at ICC SKGA - Seismic and Building Code Consulting. His expertise includes structural modeling and seismic design.

ICC CEUs: This class is three hours of instruction and offers 0.3 ICC CEUs.

Tuesday, March 12 | 1 – 4 pm: IBC Structural Loads - Wind

Presented by John "Buddy" Showalter, PE, International Code Council (ICC)

This course reviews the provisions for developing wind loads using the 2021 IBC and wind load procedures in ASCE/SEI 7-16. An overview of the methods used to determine wind loads in ASCE/SEI 7-16 for main-wind-force resisting systems and components and cladding is included, as well as several examples for wind design of buildings.

Learning Objectives: Identify code provisions and referenced standards applicable to wind loads; determine process by which wind loads are developed; identify the correct procedure to develop wind loads on a particular building; and develop wind loads for main wind-force-resisting system and components and cladding.

About our PresenterBuddy Showalter is a senior staff engineer with the ICC product development group. He develops technical resources and provides education in support of the structural provisions of the IBC and IRC. He has over 35 years of experience in the development and support of building codes and standards having spent 26 years with the American Wood Council. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

ICC CEUs: This class is three hours of instruction and offers 0.3 ICC CEUs.

NOTE: The two above half-day classes are offered separately, though the discounted "full day" price is offered for attendees who would like to register for both. Taking both classes would provide six hours of instruction for 0.6 ICC CEUs. Check the selection on the registration form for BOTH classes.

Wednesday, March 13 | 9 am – 4 pm: IRC Building Safety Features

Presented by Jessie Sorensen, International Code Council (ICC)

This class will examine the critical concepts of the 2021 IRC regarding fire and life safety issues. We will discuss the correct application of the building planning, fire-resistance, means of egress, emergency escape and rescue, safety glazing and other building safety provisions. Applying code requirements to design, plan submittals, plan review and inspection decisions necessary to ensure safe residential buildings complying with the IRC.

Learning Objectives: Discuss application of fire-resistance, building planning and other building safety features; apply code requirements to design, review or inspection.

Who should take this course: Building Inspectors, Plans Examiners, Permit Technicians, Building Officials, Designers, Builders, Architects, and Engineers (OBOA members and non-members welcome)

Level of Expertise: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced

Class Materials: International Residential Code (IRC) 2021

About our PresenterSorenson, as Technical Staff in Business Product Development, is responsible for technical review, teaching and writing of educational resources.  Jessie spent 10+ years working for municipalities where she started as a Permit Technician and worked her way into a building, plumbing and mechanical inspector and then a Commercial/Residential Plans examiner prior to coming to ICC in 2021. You could say her passions are people and Building Codes.

ICC CEUs: This class is six hours of instruction and offers 0.6 ICC CEUs.

Thursday, March 14 | 9 am – 4:30 pm: Sprinkler Selection for High-Piled Storage (HPS)

Presented by Jeff Dunkel, National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA)

Explore the selection and application of automatic sprinklers for storage arrays where solid-pile, palletized, bin-box, shelf or rack storage commodity configurations exceed 12-feet. The course addresses the influence of various commodity and ceiling heights in sprinkler selection and system design. Learners should enter this program with the ability to apply NFPA 13 density/area design curves.

Who should take this course: Building Inspectors, Plans Examiners, Permit Technicians, Building Officials, Designers, Builders, Architects, and Engineers (OBOA members and non-members welcome)

Level of Expertise: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced

Standard and editions: NFPA 13; select edition: 2019

About our PresenterJeff Dunkel, P.E. serves as a Fire Protection Engineer in the Contractor Services Department with Michael Joanis, P.E. Degree in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology, Jeff worked both in consulting and construction for 13 years of fire protection engineering experience.

ICC CEUs: This class is seven hours of instruction and offers 0.7 ICC CEUs. There will be a 30-minute lunch break at noon.

Earn ICC CEUs for All Classes

Every class is approved for continuing education credit (units) through the International Code Council Preferred Provider Program (ICC PPP). Details for each class CEUs are provided above. A Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants upon completion. OBOA provides attendance rosters to ICC as required as a Preferred Provider. It is the responsibility of each student to self-report and maintain record of their participation in our programs.

OBOA is an approved International Code Council (ICC) Preferred Provider. The Preferred Provider Program recognizes and promotes ICC-approved educational offerings as they relate to codes, standards and guidelines, as well as building construction materials, products and methods. ICC certificate holders may obtain ICC CEUs from Preferred Providers that can be applied toward the renewal requirements of ICC’s certification program. It is the intent of OBOA that all programs will offer approved CEUs through the Preferred Provider Program. An ICC CEU is a continuing education unit; each 10 clock hours of continuing education equals 1 CEU.

All OBOA educational programs (trainings, QBMs, classes/sessions; all courses) are courses through the International Code Council (ICC) Preferred Provider Program (PPP). These hours can be applied to ICC certification renewal as continuing education credits as indicated for each class (typically between 5-6 for each but varies per program). Please check with your appropriate jurisdiction and/or institution regarding your specific continuing education credit needs. Our typical one-day seminar or institute class has 6 hours of instruction, or 0.6 CEUs. Credit is awarded for a variety of activities wherein the objective is achieving relevant professional knowledge beyond that required for initial certification.
