This class reviews the use of the alternate materials and methods requirements of the codes. The class will review the use of ICC evaluation reports when using the Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC). Different types of materials and methods will be discussed. Examples of how those materials and methods should be evaluated will be provided to attendees will have a better understanding of how to review or submit alternates.
Learning Objectives:
• Attendees will learn how to evaluate alternate materials and methods of construction.
• Attendees will learn how to use ICC Evaluation Reports in reviewing alternate materials and methods of construction.
• Attendees will understand how to determine if alternate materials and methods of construction comply with the intent and purpose of the code.

About our Presenter: This will be one of the last presentations Mr. Thomas will ever provide – he is retiring at the end of 2026. Be sure to join us to say goodbye to one of the best instructors out there! Mr. Thomas has over forty-five years’ experience in working with building codes including plan reviews, inspections and administration. Working for a building code-consulting firm since 1999, he has served as the contract Building Official for different local jurisdictions in Colorado. Mr. Thomas has served on several ICBO and ICC committees and chaired th ICC Means of Egress Code Development Committee. He was named an honorary member of ICC in 2021. He is also the author of the book, Building Code Basics. He and his previous firm, Colorado Code Consulting, were awarded the Educator of the Year Award by ICC in 2018. He has presented building code classes for the last 39 years and provides an interesting and engaging look at building codes.
This workshop is separate from the ABM and not included in ABM fees. Earn additional ICC Preferred Provider CEUs by attending each (Workshop 0.6 and ABM 1.0). Please be sure to add/select the workshop on the ABM registration form if you plan to attend. Pre-registration is required.

That single session sparked a company-wide campaign to build a more empowered, productive workforce.
About our Presenter: After two decades leading multimillion-dollar tech projects for Fortune 500 companies, Mike turned his frustration with being labeled the “token blind guy” into a mission to challenge stereotypes and advance workforce equity. Under his leadership, BIT has built global partnerships, connected disabled professionals to meaningful careers, and established a U.S. Department of Labor-registered apprenticeship program supported by a major Disability Innovation Fund grant. Mike continues to reshape how corporate America views disability – as a strength and competitive advantage, not a limitation.

Earn ICC CEUs at the ABM and Pre–ABM Workshop
OBOA is a proud to be part of the International Code Council Preferred Provider Program (ICC PPP) network. All OBOA programs offer ICC Preferred Provider approved continuing education credit (CEUs). Attend our popular and high–quality programs to log hours for application or renewal of your ICC certifications. The use of Preferred Provider training is required as a condition of all certification renewals, so that classes you take through OBOA directly enhance your professional development and career growth. ICC certificate holders must obtain a specified number of CEUs every three years in order to maintain their certifications and a portion of these CEUs must be obtained through Preferred Provider or ICC training. OBOA offers an extensive year–round schedule of events for members and colleagues to earn their CEUs. OBOA provides certificates of attendance to those who complete the course and submits rosters of attendance to ICC. Each individual should maintain record of their participation in all CEU programs.

Pre–ABM registration fees include: In–person attendance at the full–day meeting with electronic session materials as provided by the speaker, coffee and refreshments and a hosted lunch, and excellent professional networking opportunities. This course also offers six contact hours of ICC Preferred Provider CEUs (0.6).

ABM registration fees include: attendance for the registered individual at all Thursday and Friday sessions and presentations, including the Opening Keynote, 2026 Awards Presentation, State of Oregon BCD Update, Industry and Association Updates, State and Committee Board Reports, OBOA Officers and Board Installation, ICC Report, all electronic session and onsite materials (as provided by the speakers), Lobbyist/Legislative Update, and Code Bowl. Hosted meals: Wednesday's Opening Welcome Reception, breakfast on Thursday and Friday, lunch on Thursday, and the Thursday Awards and Reception.
