We look forward to seeing our members at our upcoming OBOA Fall QBM on November 14th! OBOA invites you to another outstanding quarterly business meeting where we will discuss many important industry updates, get the latest BCD news and updates, get the inside scoop about the upcoming 2026 Legislative Session provided by our lobbyists, and an always popular keynote and discussion with fellow code officials. We extend a special invitation to our fire code official friends for this meeting topic in particular -- let's bring building and fire together for an excellent well-rounded discussion! QBM Keynote: NFPA 13 Significant Changes from 2019 Edition to the 2022 EditionPresented by Greg Rogers, MS, FM, CFO MiFire, Regional Director of NFPA This session explores the top five significant changes in NFPA 13 (2022 edition) that will be referenced by the 2024 International Building Code adopted in Oregon. Attendees will gain insight into the long-debated Single Point Density update in Section 19.2.3.1.1, which refines the basis for design curves after multiple code cycles. The program will also clarify revised guidance on design approaches (19.1.1, Annex A), friction loss adjustments for nitrogen systems (8.2.6.9), and the addition of provisions for Electrically Operated Sprinklers (15.6). Finally, it will address new obstruction criteria for ESFR sprinklers (14.2.11.3.1) and their practical impact on sprinkler system design and performance. About our Presenter: Greg Rogers is a retired Deputy Fire Chief and current Regional Director for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). His career began in 1992 as an instructor at the Oklahoma State Fire Service Training Center and includes service as a Fire Safety Engineer with North Metro Fire Rescue in Colorado, more than 17 years with South Kitsap Fire and Rescue in Washington, and as Deputy Chief with the Spokane Valley Fire Department. He has developed and taught courses nationwide on community risk reduction (CRR), fire code, inspections, and investigations, and is internationally recognized for advancing CRR and data-driven solutions to improve decision-making and service delivery. His work has been featured in the UK and Shanghai, China. Rogers has also served in executive leadership roles including Chair of the IAFC Fire and Life Safety Section, Past Commissioner with the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and Past President of the Washington State Association of Fire Marshals. Throughout his career, he has been dedicated to empowering others, building coalitions, and driving meaningful progress in fire and life safety. Don't miss out -- we hope to see you there!
11/14 Fall Quarterly Business Meeting Agenda:
This meeting is for you! Bring questions, concerns, challenges, successes and everything in between to share in open discussions. OBOA always welcomes our members to bring topics of interest to discuss with fellow members at our meetings. Take advantage of this quality time to connect with fellow building safety professionals -- and all are invited to participate: building officials, plans examiners, inspectors, permit techs, and all building department staff -- your entire team will hopefully find value in networking and learning with peers, so please consider bringing staff with you. We also welcome our fire code officials and partners to join in these meaningful discussions.
