Chief Building Official - City of Indio, Indio, CA
Annual Salary - High $165,494 / Low $112,013
Closing Date:  Open Until Filled

Calling All Current or Aspiring Building Officials: Are you a recognized leader? Interested in taking on a challenge? Have the drive and desire to help create a top notch Building and Safety team? Then this may be just the job for you! For the first time in almost 10 years, the City of Indio is seeking a Chief Building Official. This is a unique professional opportunity to lead a team of building inspectors, plans examiners and permit technicians in the largest city in the Coachella Valley that also welcomes nearly 1.4 million visitors a year. Come join Team Indio and you will be joining a City that is:

  • The No. 1 City in the America for Live Music
  • The No. 2 Emerging Travel Destination in America
  • The No. 3 Fastest Growing City in Southern California
  • The No. 8 Fastest Growing City in California
  • The No. 30 Fastest Growing City in America

With more than 3,500 housing units planned or under construction and significant commercial and industrial activity, Indio has generated one of the highest levels of building activity and business starts in eastern Riverside County for the past several years.

Reality Checks: If you are interested in applying for this job, here a couple of things that you need to know:

  • The Chief Building Official position has not been filled since the Great Recession. This means that the new Chief Building Official will be taking over a team that has not had a senior leader in almost 10 years, and leading this team will require patience, persistence, vision and the ability to motivate individuals and a team.
  • The Department is developing a new organizational culture that will be centered on accountability, communication and trust.
  • There is a lack of consistent systems, processes and business practices in the Building and Safety Division. The new Chief Building Official will need to have background in continuous process improvement and be able to overcome resistance to change and a "that's the way we have always done it" sentiment among team members.
  • The City is moving to a new Land Management/Permitting System. The new Chief Building Official will be expected to help lead the development and implementation of this System so knowledge of these kinds of systems will be absolutely needed.
