Tuesday, January 28 | 9 am – 4 pm
Residential Code Application – Architectural, Structural, Energy

Presented by Jessie Sorensen, International Code Council (ICC)

Breakdown and dissect architectural and structural residential plan notes and symbols through a guided step by step process. Identify each piece of a plan by defining the use/purpose of the plan note/detail/material while learning to navigate the IRC to find where requirements for each note are found, and if the plan is in compliance. Incorporates construction document reading at basic and intermediate levels, demonstrates the use of digital codes to allow comparison of the code requirement to be viewed alongside the plan details and notes. Please note this course does not address Oregon amendments; if you would like to see an upcoming class with those added, please let us know.

Learning Objectives
      1. Explore fundamental provisions of the 2021 IRC as they relate to a plan set.
      2. Implement strategies for plan review.
      3. Explore and demonstrate proper knowledge of code and plan terms.
      4. View application of code requirement directly to plan set/notes.

About our PresenterJessie Sorensen, Technical Staff in Business Product Development is responsible for technical review, teaching and writing of educational resources.  Jessie spent 10+ years working for municipalities where she started as a Permit Technician and worked her way into a building, plumbing and mechanical inspector and then a Commercial/Residential Plans examiner prior to coming to ICC in 2021. You could say her passions are people and Building Codes.

Fuel Gas Piping, Combustion Air, and B-Vent Sizing 

Presented by Jason Phelps, Jason Phelps Code Consulting

This class has many illustrations and photos to demonstrate key components of gas piping installations, combustion air requirements, and b-vent installations. as well as many tips of what to look for and how to apply the code to inspection and plan review. Examples will be provided to work on in class.

About our PresenterJason Phelps has 16 years commercial construction experience in steel stud framing, drywall, and acoustical ceilings. He received an Associates of Applied Science in Building Inspection Technology from PCC in 2004. He worked as a Commercial Building Inspector with the City of Newberg for 6 years. Currently working for the City of Hillsboro as a Plans Examiner, specializing in hazardous materials for the last 14 years. He also works as a building codes instructor with Chemeketa Community College for the past 8 years. He was a 2018 & 2021 IMC committee member and a 2024 IBC-General committee member. Current 2027 IMC committee member.

Thursday, January 30 | 9 am – 4 pm
2024 IBC Significant Structural Changes and ASCE 7-22

Presented by John "Buddy" Showalter, PE, International Code Council (ICC)

This full-day seminar includes review and analysis of select significant structural changes from the 2021 to the 2024 edition of the International Building Code (IBC). Specific code changes that have occurred will be identified along with the reasoning behind the changes. Topics include changes to provisions for roofs (Chapter 15), structural design (Chapter 16), special inspections (Chapter 17), soils/foundations (Chapter 18) and materials including concrete, masonry, steel, wood and glass (Chapters 19-24). Updated provisions for temporary structures (Chapter 31) will be discussed. Changes to the IBC-referenced 2022 ASCE/SEI 7 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE 7-22) will also be presented. Environmental loads to be discussed include rain, snow, ice, wind, tornado, earthquake, tsunami and flood. Please note course material does not incorporate Oregon amendments, but highlights will be discussed in class.

    • Understand proper evaluation of structural criteria for minimum safety in the IBC and ASCE 7
    • Identify changes to structural criteria to increase minimum safety in the 2024 IBC and ASCE 7-22
    • Consider examples to show application of the updated provisions
    • Determine additional available resources

About our PresenterBuddy Showalter is a senior staff engineer with the ICC product development group. He develops technical resources and provides education in support of the structural provisions of the IBC and IRC. He has over 35 years of experience in the development and support of building codes and standards having spent 26 years with the American Wood Council. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

   Earn ICC Preferred Provider CEUs – All Classes Approved

Every class is approved for continuing education credit (units) through the International Code Council Preferred Provider Program (ICC PPP). Details for each class CEUs are provided above. A Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants and should be kept for individual CE record keeping. OBOA provides attendance rosters to ICC as required as a Preferred Provider. Each member self-reports and maintains record of their participation in our programs directly with ICC.

OBOA is an approved International Code Council (ICC) Preferred Provider. The Preferred Provider Program recognizes and promotes ICC-approved educational offerings as they relate to codes, standards and guidelines, as well as building construction materials, products and methods. ICC certificate holders may obtain ICC CEUs from Preferred Providers that can be applied toward the renewal requirements of ICC’s certification program. It is the intent of OBOA that all programs will offer approved CEUs through the Preferred Provider Program. An ICC CEU is a continuing education unit; each 10 clock hours of continuing education equals 1 CEU.

All OBOA educational programs (trainings, QBMs, classes/sessions; all courses) are courses approved through the International Code Council (ICC) Preferred Provider Program (PPP). These hours can be applied to ICC certification renewal as continuing education credits as indicated for each class (typically between 5-6 for each but varies per program). Please check with your appropriate jurisdiction and/or institution regarding your specific continuing education credit needs. Our typical one-day seminar or institute class has 6 hours of instruction, or 0.6 CEUs. Credit is awarded for a variety of activities wherein the objective is achieving relevant professional knowledge beyond that required for initial certification.

Fees include virtual attendance at the live program for a full day, emailed handout/session materials (as provided by speakers), Q&A opportunities to pose questions and engage the presenter(s) and other participants, and six hours of approved continuing education units (CEUs)/credit through the International Code Council Preferred Provider Program (ICC PPP). There will be a one-hour lunch break and brief breaks throughout at the discretion of each instructor. 

Zoom participation details, meeting link and class materials will be emailed to registered attendees 24-48 hours prior to the class. Books are not included in class fees unless stated otherwise for a specific class.
