A3) Residential Plans Review

Class Description:

Designed to provide a broad overview of the process for residential plan review, this one day seminar will provide the basic steps involved to complete a comprehensive review of a residence. The seminar will discuss the tools and process for conducting a residential plan review. It will also increase your awareness of the necessary items required to ensure code compliance of the homes built in your jurisdiction.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Better Understanding of how plan reviewers take the provided information from the supporting documents (i.e soils reports, energy documents, manual j, d, and s) and apply that information to the submitted plans to verify code compliance.
  • Learn how to create a working relationship  between the code officials, architect, engineers, designers, and owners of the project.
  • Take requirements from the code and recognize them on a set of plans.
  • Learn how connections are taken from the information provided and plan review comments are formed.

About our Presenter:

Having been in the construction industry for over 40 years, Gil bring a hands-on perspective to building code compliance. In 1994 he started his building code compliance career as a building inspector then plans examiner and served as the Chief Building Official for Parker, Colorado from 2003-2016. Gil has been active in building code development. He served on the International Residential Code / Plumbing and Mechanical code development committee for the 2009 and 2012 editions of the IRC. The International Commercial Energy Code development committee for the 2015 IECC, 2018 IECC. The Residential Energy Code Development committee for the 2021 IECC and currently is on the ICC Code Correlation Committee. Gil was honored in 2012 with the first Energy Code Champion award given by The Institute for Market Transformation.  Along with his current plans examining and inspection duties Gil has been an instructor for several organizations. International Code Council,  Colorado Chapter ICC Educational Institute, EduCode, Region III, Washington Association of Building Officials, Johnson County Contractor Licensing Dept. and Arizona Building Officials.

ICC Preferred Provider Program Continuing Education Credit (ICC PPP CEUs):

OBOA is an approved International Code Council (ICC) Preferred Provider. The Preferred Provider Program recognizes and promotes ICC-approved educational offerings as they relate to codes, standards and guidelines, as well as building construction materials, products and methods. ICC certificate holders may obtain ICC CEUs from Preferred Providers that can be applied toward the renewal requirements of ICC’s certification program. It is the intent of OBOA that all classes offered at institutes will be approved for the Preferred Provider Program.

ICC PPP Pending Approval | 0.6 CEUs (must attend all six hours for credit)

An ICC CEU is a continuing education unit; each 10 clock hours of continuing education equals 1 CEU. Our typical one-day seminar has 6 hours of instruction, or 0.6 CEUs. Credit is awarded for a variety of activities wherein the objective is achieving relevant professional knowledge beyond that required for initial certification. Participation in all OBOA courses are approved for International Code Council (ICC) certification renewal continuing education credits as noted for each class. Please check with your appropriate jurisdiction and/or institution regarding your specific continuing education credit needs.
