B6) Wiring Requirements and Wire Sizing, NEC Articles 300 and 310

Class Description:

This half-day course will explain in detail the requirements of Article 300 and 310 of the NEC and will also go in depth on wire sizing provisions. Examples and calculations will also be presented in order to walk the class through how to properly size wires, including wire ampacity derations. Topics covered include: general wiring requirements, underground installations, protection of conductors from damage, wet locations, securing and supporting, mechanical continuity, raceway installations, ampacities of conductors, ampacity derations and adjustment factors, terminal ratings, and identification of conductors. This presentation is based on the 2020 NEC.

About our Presenter:

Mr. Smith has been an inspector for over 18 years. He has obtained 19 ICC certifications, including Certified Building Official and Master Code Professional. Doug has taught hundreds of electrical, solar photovoltaic, and energy storage system classes over the years for various organizations throughout the Western United States. With WC3, Doug has performed well over 10,000 plan reviews for solar PV and energy storage systems (small and large-scale) for jurisdictions across Utah, Nevada, California, and Idaho. He has also performed thousands of inspections on such systems. Doug currently serves on the NEC for Code Making Panel 10. He also serves as an STP Member on five UL Standards:  UL 9540 (Energy Storage Systems), UL 1703/61730 (Flat Plate PV Modules), UL 1741 (Inverters, Converters, Chargers…), UL 2703 (PV Racking…), and UL 6703 (PV Connectors…).

ICC Preferred Provider Program Continuing Education Credit (ICC PPP CEUs):

OBOA is an approved International Code Council (ICC) Preferred Provider. The Preferred Provider Program recognizes and promotes ICC-approved educational offerings as they relate to codes, standards and guidelines, as well as building construction materials, products and methods. ICC certificate holders may obtain ICC CEUs from Preferred Providers that can be applied toward the renewal requirements of ICC’s certification program. It is the intent of OBOA that all classes offered at institutes will be approved for the Preferred Provider Program.

ICC PPP Pending Approval | 0.6 CEUs (must attend all six hours for credit)

An ICC CEU is a continuing education unit; each 10 clock hours of continuing education equals 1 CEU. Our typical one-day seminar has 6 hours of instruction, or 0.6 CEUs. Credit is awarded for a variety of activities wherein the objective is achieving relevant professional knowledge beyond that required for initial certification. Participation in all OBOA courses are approved for International Code Council (ICC) certification renewal continuing education credits as noted for each class. Please check with your appropriate jurisdiction and/or institution regarding your specific continuing education credit needs.
